1.Droughts in the Western US and Europe have pushed water to the top of the news agenda on both continents. In the US, the big story has been the Colorado River, where Arizona, Nevada and Mexico have been told to expect deeper cuts in supply from January 2023. In Germany, the low level of the River Rhine is impeding river traffic, potentially forcing production shutdowns at factories along the river. In France, the low level of the River Loire is threatening power production at four nuclear plants along its length. China's Yangtze River Basin has also been experiencing extreme drought conditions, forcing power rationing in Sichuan Province as hydroelectric plants cut production. 2.California Governor Gavin Newsom has published his water resourcing plan for the state. Most of the additional water will come from a big increase in water reuse (see analysis p7). Some brackish desalination is also pencilled in (see story p14).
