Held in conjunction with the charity Navy Wings, it was clear from the build-up to the Fly Navy Airshow that, together with the Bedfordshire-based Shuttleworth Collection, it would live up to the credo 'Educate, Inspire, Remember', with an incredible assortment of both home-based and visiting aeroplanes. From gliders and helicopters to interwar 'silver-winged' biplanes and record-breaking high-performance piston fighters, the line-up was easily among the venue's best in many years. A commendably sized crowd stretched along the length of Old Warden's hallowed turf. That said, compared with previous near sell-out editions of Fly Navy, the crowd along the fence seemed thinner. Could this be due to the slight hike in ticket price and the shadow of increased cost of living? Or re-emerging uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, perhaps?
