Male subimago of Massartella venezuelensis Pescador Peters, 1990 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae)

Massartella Lestage, 1930 is an endemic and cold-adapted leptophlebiid genus of the Neotropics, distributed in southeastern Brazil-northeastern Argentina, and the Guiana Shield along the Venezuela-Brazil border (Savage 1987; Pescador and Peters 1990; Derka 2002; Derka et al. 2009; Souto et al. 2013). It is represented by five species: Massartella alegrettae Ulmer, 1943 known from nymph, male imago and subimago; M. brieni (Lestage, 1924) with all stages described; M. venezuelensis Pescador & Peters, 1990 known only by female subimago and mature nymphs; M. devani Derka, 2002 and M. hirsuta Derka, Svitok & Schl?gl, 2009 known only by nymphs. Currently, the genus is represented by two species in Brazil (M. alegrettae and M. brieni) that occur in mountains along the Atlantic Forest (Lestage 1924; Ulmer 1943; Pescador and Peters 1990; Gatti et al. 2022).
