Five bidders have been shortlisted to deliver two roads contracts worth a combined £1.9bn for the Lower Thames Crossing. National Highways revealed that four outfits are competing to deliver roads in Kent and two are in the running in Essex. The Lower Thames Crossing - the proposed second road link across the river -is expected to cost at least £6.8bn. One of the Kent bidders, BFV, is also in the running forthe £2.3bn tunnels-and-approaches job, the shortlist for which was announced in April. The project was due to be completed in 2027 or 2028 but, in October last year, the body withdrew its application for a development consent order, stating it needed to make changes to its plans. That permission is needed before the project can proceed and has not yet been resubmitted.
