On 15 July 2021 I attended a bowls match at Navenby Bowls Club (SK989575 VC 53) just before 2pm and saw a large beetle on its back on concrete paving unable to right itself. I recognised it as a chafer, but not a species I had seen before. It was collected and carded and identified as Amphimallon fallenii (Gyllenhal) using Duff (2020). Three days later on 18 July 2021 mid-morning, near the end of my garden (Blankney Fen TF125627) I saw another Amphimallon which I caught by hand. There was no doubt it was another A. fallenii. I released it onto grassy vegetation where it climbed a stem and immediately took off and flew swiftly southwest over wheat fields. My garden established over 30 years is completely surrounded by arable fields a mile or more in each direction at about 2 m above sea level.
