There is nothing plain about plain weave, as this book expertly demonstrates. Requiring only two shafts, plain weave can be woven on a frame, rigid heddle, table or floor loom. Written by Tina Ignell, editor-in-chief at VAV Magazine, this book oozes the Scandinavian love of textiles while featuring over 60 projects in linen, cotton, wool, silk and even paper. The near full-size photographs are beautiful, allowing close inspection of every woven fabric and the placement of each thread; a feast for the eyes of any textile enthusiast. Each project is illustrated with a full-page photograph to accompany the weaving instructions and notes on the facing page. Plain weave starts with stripes and checks, and moves through open and spaced weaves to the glory of colour effects such as log cabin. Then comes the manipulation - the plain weave cloth using gathers, pleats and folds, before moving on to fulling and shrinking techniques to create even more interest in the finished fabric. Knots, piles, chenille and raised soumak techniques are then introduced to show that plain weave doesn't always have to be flat - it can be textured too. Originally published in Swedish, I have been waiting for the English version - it has not disappointed.
