The effect of apparent blurring of sharp boundaries and the sharpening of blurred boundaries during the observation of moving objects
This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of the increase of the perceived sharpness of strongly blurred boundaries and of the blurring of sharp boundaries, caused by the motion of observed objects. It is shown that this phenomenon is caused by a lag of the inhibition signals relative to the excitation signals and by Saturation of the signals when they are transmitted over the magno channels of the visual system. A functional model of the retinas of the eyes has been developed. The results of calculations carried out using, the model agree well with the experimental data. The model made it possible to predict and then to experimentally detect two new phenomena. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.
