EU member states have failed to reach a qualified majority at a meeting held late last week on accepting or rejecting the Commission’s recommendation for a ten-year extension to glyphosate herbicide’s approval. The Commission has proposed a ten-year renewal starting in December after an assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) found “no critical area of concern” involving the active ingredient. The issue moves to another vote next month. The required majority to adopt or reject a Commission proposal is at least 15 member states representing a minimum 65% of the bloc’s population. The recommendation failed that hurdle at the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF committee) meeting. As a result, the proposal will be submitted to the Appeal Committee, the Commission says. It will rule on the matter in the first half of November.
