In the late 20th century, ceramic practice was catalysed into bold new forms. The so-called 'New Ceramic' saw a reconnection with its own history and wider art history; familiar forms were challenged and abstracted; surfaces became a canvas for decoration; and the vessel became a site of interrogation. Less common was the young potter apprenticed to a rural pottery, rehearsing form after functional form, instead, in Britain, the main players came from the art schools.
