The need for high levels of data privacy in various applications has made transmitting safe data more crucial. In this work, a cipher algorithm based secure optical communication system is demonstrated via OptiSystem software to transmit a secure message over a link distance of 100 km with bitrate of 80 Gbps. The message in the electrical domain is encrypted and decrypted using the MATLAB component via Rivest Cipher 4 (RC4) algorithm. The results show that message encryption decreased link distance from 77.4 to 63 km by around 18.6 as a result of an increase in the dispersion effect. Dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) is used to address this problem, increasing link distance from 63 to 100 km by roughly 58.73.
