How do regular reviews of competence ensure trainees are progressing effectively?Review of competence progression (RCP) is a continual assessment process that forms an integral part of dental and medical postgraduate training.14 It serves as a check-in point for trainees and trainers to assess compliance with predefined competences, and to ensure that trainees are progressing satisfactorily on a personal and professional level, relevant to their stage of training. Alongside relevant specialty specific examinations, RCP has been considered the gold standard in training validation by the four statutory education boards.3 In tandem, they assess both applied clinical knowledge and technical competence across multiple domains. This paper will explore the function of the RCP process in dental specialty and core training programmes, touching on the question of equivalence to our medical counterparts. It will also focus on the recent challenges and obstacles faced by dental trainees undertaking the RCP process during the COVID-19 era.
