The inspiration for this raw-fired stoneware bowl with a small attachment - its shape, look and feel - are drawn from a Welsh coracle (cwrwgl), a small fishing boat constructed like a basket from split willow and hazel. My workshop is situated on the estuary of the River Teifi in St Dogmaels near Cardigan in West Wales. Each of the larger rivers in Wales has its own traditional coracle design responding to both river conditions and the lineage of the local coracle makers. For me, the little black boat is a highly evocative symbol of a sense of site, place and cultural craft heritage.
