MASSACHUSETTS-BASED lithium-ion cell manufacturing company 24M has won $9m in funding from the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The company plans to use the funds to develop and scale next-generation high energy density lithium metal anode cells for electric aviation. The 24M team has a programme to develop batteries incorporating a lithium metal anode and its SemiSolid cathode platform to deliver lower cost, superior power and improved energy density to electric aviation applications. The team will also develop and scale up a commercial, modular, pilot line for customer validation with a clear path to gigascale production capacity for the new lithium metal battery technology.24M Technologies received the award from ARPA-E's Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) programme, which supports the scaling of high-risk and potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications.
