Democrats in the US House of Representatives have approved a sweeping bill that would offer $555bn for renewable energy and addressing climate change, overhaul federal oil and gas leasing and impose a new fee on excess methane emissions. The House voted 220-213 to approve the bill, ending weeks of uncertainty over whether there was adequate Democratic support for the bill after its price tag was cut in half. The $1.85 trillion package now advances to an uncertain fate in the evenly-split US Senate, where Democrats are likely to need to make changes to ease concerns by moderates and align with parliamentary rules needed to avoid a Republican filibuster.
