Ankle fractures are a common type of injury that foot and ankle surgeons treat, but they are not without their challenges. Lauge-Hansen described four types of injury patterns for ankle fractures, and while this classification system is widely used, it does not offer prognostic value for these injuries. Understanding the functional outcomes between these injury patterns can aid providers in anticipating and discussing long-term sequelae as well as evaluating the need for further treatment. The authors in this study detail comparisons of SAD type ankle fractures with other TAI to determine injury features, complications, and functional outcomes. SAD ankle fractures are an uncommon type of TAI with an incidence of only around 5%. This article presenting 65 patients with SAD type injuries is the largest comparative study to date, and offers important insight into these injuries.
