This is a deceptively slim book with a wealth of information between its covers, including glorious images drawn from many famous weavers as well as Ann's own extensive collection. Opening with design inspirations from natural structures and materials, she discusses the interactions between nature and design before moving on to a tour of the many different weave structures and weaving materials, and how their respective properties can work together to influence a final design. Next, Ann looks from the opposite direction; the desired properties of the final fabric and considers which weave structures could produce these features. There is also a very interesting discussion about why woven fabric doesn't need to be confined to a rectangle, and how 'loom to body' clothing can take advantage of the broad range of materials and structural properties available to the weaver. The final section contains practical advice and examples of designs, moving between the different approaches detailed through the book, and highlighting the importance of sampling, recording and reflecting as a design is brought to life.
