Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala had been entrusted with the prestigious project for modernisation of the rolling stock for the Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway (which has UNESCO World Heritage Status). This project posed significant challenges as there was no digital data for modeling of narrow-gauge tracks for development and verification of coach designs. RCF design and production team innovated to manufacture in-house almost all required infrastructure like new design shell jigs, lifting tackles, static test jigs, raised NG lines, loading gauges etc. After the Railway Board gave the design approvals, two prototype shells were manufactured which were rigorously tested by RDSO in October 2022 for static stress analysis at RCF. Later, these two shells (of air-conditioned Chair Car and Power Car) were transported to Kalka and successfully tested multiple times on the Kalka Railway at speeds higher than the present sectional speed to determine the stability and ride quality.
