Construction industry lags behind in almost all areas of the economy digitalisation is proceeding rapidly, but the building industry lags miles behind. Whereas in industrial production buildings in which robots handle the completely automated production with not a single person present have been standard for a long time now, in many building sites in the heart of Europe you can still see workers laying brick upon brick in the pouring rain, building formwork, or, in thunderous noise, chiselling slits in walls that others have erected previously. As yet the often-invoked digital chain in the planning and building process, which extends from design to the control of the production machines - apart from the field of timber building and a few other exceptions - very seldom represents the reality. And where it is found then computer-controlled execution is generally used to realise extravagant, abstruse formal ideas. However, experts see 3D printing, which has been established in industry for some time, as a new key technology based on digital processes. What is meant here is the application of material at points or in layers by computer-controlled machines. In the area of concrete printing -but also with earth - a great deal has been achieved very recently.
