This paper outlines the statues of the latest research in the fields of wide band gap(WBG)power devices, power control units (PCUs)for EV/HEV, passive components for power supplies, and grid interconnections, which are essential for the development of power electronics. In addition, we will introduce some of the goals and achievements of two cutting-edge national projects: Universal Smart Power Module(USPM),which is currently being researched and developed in the 2nd SIP, and Integrated Power Electronics for a Decarbonized Society, which is currently being researched and developed in the Innovative Power Electronics R&D Project of MEXT. Furthermore, an overview of the performance requirements for passive devices used in PCUs for EVs, inverters for small and medium capacity industrial applications, and power supplies for data centers will be presented. Finally, we will show how the functional integration of power device technology, circuit system technology such as gate circuits and power units, and passive component technology will enable power electronic products with a higher performance and smaller size in the future, thereby contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
