The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is resuming efforts to protect the Bristol Bay watershed. The remote area of Southwestern Alaska is home to the world's largest sockeye salmon run, 25 federally recognized tribes, and vast mineral resources including the Pebble gold and copper deposit. On Sept. 9, the EPA moved to restart the process of using the Clean Water Act to protect certain water in Bristol Bay over the long term that "are essential to the commercial, subsistence, and recreational fisheries and other activities that support AlaskaNatives and communities in the state.""What's at stake is preventing pollution that would disproportionately impact Alaska Natives, and protecting a sustainable future for the most productive salmon fishery in North America," said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan.
