The painting by Sexto Canegallo (Sestri Ponente near Genoa, 1892-Genoa 1966) entitled La Folla (The Crowd) and reproduced in Fig. la, was exhibited in Rome and Genoa in 1920 and the Catalogue reported a caption which reads "Analysis of collective life rendered in cerebral vibrations. Human faces expressing oscillations in the state of mind of the collectivity (calm, pleasure, pain, hate, calm)". The artist used the typical features of Graves' orbitopathy for the inappropriate representation of a state of hate.
