As I write this it is mid-April in the suburbs just north of Chicago. Though I'm very happy to say this winter wasn't too harsh, it sure has been slow to leave. My favorite drive-in hamburger joint has been open for several weeks, but, finally, the last few days we've had our first real taste of summer. A couple nights ago, on a whim, I decided to take advantage of an unseasonably warm evening and fired up my big baby for the first time since early December. A short drive reminded me of the simple joys of a warm night, open windows, and the rumble of a small-block Chevy with dual exhaust. In the coming week, my enjoyment of cars, old and new, big and small, will shift more outdoors. This summer some of my free time will probably be taken up by a handful of cruise nights, a car show or three, and a day wandering through a fairgrounds full of car stuff searching for something that I absolutely must have. I predict a bit of car spotting, some model cars being spray painted, and a few Sunday mornings spent looking at cars while drinking coffee. There will be car washing and, unfortunately, inconsiderate birds. There might even be a day filled with sights, sounds, and bratwurst at Road America. Hopefully, some completely unexpected automotive experiences will come along too.
