Investigation tells us that this image appeared in the May/ June issue of Ceramic Review in 1986. Accompanying a feature on 'Chinese Reds' by Zhang Weimin, it shows potters in Yu County, Henan Province, unpacking fired Jun wares. China, of course, was the first country to produce high-fired red glaze. 'Jun porcelain in China,' wrote the author, 'is unique in its colouring because even the potter does not know the colour or pattern forthcoming, until after the piece is fired. The amount of copper, and the mix of other elements in the body and glaze, varies to such an extent that each piece emerges from the kiln with its own pattern and colour.'
