In 2018, Microsoft began work on a forward-looking district energy system for a 3 million square foot modernization project on its Redmond, Wash., campus, which would replace 12 older buildings with 17 new ones. Just four years later - in 2022 - the new Thermal Energy Center was commissioned, running on 100% carbon-free electricity with an operating efficiency that exceeds code requirements by threefold. Affiliated Engineers Inc. (AEI) -serving as executive engineer for design and as engineer of record - designed the center and its supporting thermal and electric distribution systems to meet heating and cooling demands. The all-electric plant utilizes low-temperature hot water distribution, heat recovery chillers, closed-loop geothermal and thermal energy storage.
