The raw silk obtained from cocoons is composed of fibers made up of two fibroins and sericin coating the fibers. Fibroin and sericin are both made of protein that is a polymer of amino acids, but there is a difference in the composition and structure of the constituting amino acids. Since sericin easily dissolves in alkali, normal soap is used for totally or partially removing sericin (also called scouring) prior to dyeing.
