In 2014 a consortium comprising Heidelberg Materials, VDZ and KIMA Process Control developed the Kilncooler to solve the problem of kiln hot-spots once and for all. Everything began with the Kilncooler Mobile, a 2.5m-wide spraying system with four water nozzles and four IR pyrometers for continuous online temperature control of the kiln shell using precise jets of water. The Kilncooler Mobile was intended as an emergency solution for hot spots up to 500°C. At higher temperature the water does not spray any more, as the kiln must be stopped.
