The Brazilian municipality of Sao Simao in the state of Goias is preparing to tender the first concession in the country that will combine solid waste services with water and wastewater operations. The 35-year contract, for which proposals are due in February 2022, will involve the private concessionaire investing BRL49.33 million ($9 million) to improve water supply, wastewater collection and treatment, and solid waste infrastructure. Paulo Resende, the municipality's senior engineer, explained to GWI that the intention of the joint model is for the private concessionaire to reinvest revenues from the water and wastewater operations into solid waste services. Otherwise, for a project serving fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, a concession involving "solid waste management operations [alone] would never be economically feasible," he told us.
