As we close the book on 2021,one of the big topics dominating discussions at gasworld is the global helium business. Not only have we been putting the final touches to our annual Helium Issue to get 2022 underway, but more than 250 key stakeholders in the helium business are gathering in Houston,Texas for our Helium Super Summit as I write this.Helium is the perennial hot topic of course,so you may be forgiven for questioning, what's new? Appropriately for this year of such change,it seems as though there is so much that is new in helium markets. After several prolonged helium shortages over the past 15 years,Covid-19 had finally brought the period of recurring shortages to an abrupt end during early 2020.With supply and demand in relative balance throughout much of 2020 and into early 2021,the challenge ahead for helium markets will be to absorb significant, yet anticipated, new capacity from Russia and Qatar over the coming years.
