摘要

Higher inflation and a depreciating yen are prompting Japanese tourists to prefer domestic air travel over international trips during the Golden Week holiday in May that could stagnate jet fuel consumption at the country’s international airports, market sources said May 2.A recovery in flights to international destinations has been slower than domestic travel as a rise in jet fuel prices has resulted in a decrease in international airline capacity, with tourists choosing to travel to nearby destinations,JTB,Japan’s largest travel agency, said in April.”It’s understandable that general price hike and yen depreciation make consumers tighten purse strings to prefer domestic to overseas journey even if the COVID-19 pandemic is almost a thing of the past”,a Hanshin-based trader said.Narita International Airport,Japan’s largest international hub,is estimated to handle 565,100 passengers over April 28-May 7,down 43% compared with prepandemic levels in the same period in 2019 but up 576.3% from 2022,Narita International Airport Corp.,which manages NIA,said April 27.
