LNG and methanol-ready ships dominate new box ship orders

Container ships have been driving LNG orders in Ql this year. Ql 2022 was a strong quarter for LNG-fuelled ship orders. According to the latest figures from DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform, 14 orders for LNG-fuelled vessels were placed in March 2022. So far this year, orders total 70, making Ql 2022 the second-strongest quarter on record, with the growth mainly driven by container vessel orders. Commenting on the figures, DNV Maritime Advisory principal consultant Martin Wold says, "The continued growth in the number of LNG-fuelled vessels ordered could have been much higher this month and for the quarter, due to a couple of record-breaking newbuild orders reported to be imminent. Things don't seem to be slowing down just yet, with many tens of vessels in the pipeline."
