Yam severance is a phenomenon in which the yarn that makes up the fabric is severed by the sewing machine needle during sewing. It is not much of a problem for woven fabrics, but it is considered a problem for knits (especially flat knits) as the broken portion is liable to expand when the garment is worn or during washing (laddering, run).
