AUSTRALIA'S upstream oil and gas industry this week focused on the role it will play in the energy transition, with a strained trading relationship with China also in the spotlight. At the annual APPEA conference in Perth, industry leaders addressed the fact that, despite what the industry's opponents say, Australia's oil and gas industry is tackling climate change.APPEA chief executive Andrew McConville said natural gas reduces Australia's and Asia's emissions significantly in net terms."As just one example, Australian LNG [liquefied natural gas] exports are estimated by the Australian government as having the potential to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in importing countries by about 170 million tonnes each year," he said."Natural gas plays an important role in balancing renewable energy and our industry is also leading the world in the practical development of carbon capture and storage and hydrogen to ensure a cleaner energy future," McConville added.
