Readers discussed our recent poll asking whether a four-day week could benefit the manufacturing sector. It sounds a fantastic idea to me, and I think it's only a matter of time before it's implemented. The research so far seems to point to a 20% reduction in your time at work actually increasing your productivity per week, so it's a win for everyone. The same concerns were raised when we went from six to five days and productivity jumped then too. The numbers are fairly well established that four working days at around their current length provide the optimum productivity and a big improvement in people's quality of life. The rest will just be politics in convincing the people that refute the evidence that it's a change that will benefit everyone.
