On September 17, 1776, six weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a broadside was printed in Beverly, Massachusetts, that was essentially a recruiting poster. "Now fitting for a PRIVATEER in the Harbour of Beverly," the broadside announced, "the Brigantine WASHINGTON." Potential volunteers were advised that the WASHINGTON was a "prime sailer" and that "any seamen or landsmen that have an inclination to Make their Fortunes in a few Months, may have the opportunity by applying to John Dyson."
