Germany's steam coal imports are expected to rise to 22.00 mt this year, up 14% from 19.35 mt last year, while coking coal imports will be up 9% at 11.00 mt from 10.10 mt over the same period, according to coal importers group Verein der Kohlenimporteure (VDKi). Overall, coal imports this year are expected at 35-36 mt, including around 2 mt of coal used for domestic heating, VDKi managing director Manfred Mueller told IHS Markit in a telephone interview. In January this year, the group had forecast a 19% fall in imports to 26.7 mt due to the economic fallout from COVID-19 and the country's coal phase-out programme.
