In 2019,I decided my project for 2020 would be to tackle my stash of wool fibre. I thought I might spin up some novelty yarns, or blend some colours to work down the size of my stash a bit. I never guessed how much fibre there was! In January, I pulled bags out of various corners and emptied my two big baskets to see what I had, and discovered I had 3.5kg of wool in every colour of the rainbow, and almost as much again of special fibres - silk blends, silks, 'new' fibres and bamboo. Suddenly I had volumes that would make jackets, jumpers and cardigans, but all of it was in amounts ranging from 10g up to a maximum of 130g. I clearly needed a plan! I set up a spreadsheet and began to separate the fibre into groups. I was inspired by a combo spin workshop I'd taken, and also by some jumpers made by a friend who had sorted her stash into colours, so into colours it all went. But first I rescued eight particularly beautiful painted rovings that I couldn't bear to break up and blend with other fibres. Those were spun in between the big project. I also saved a couple of lovely dark blended rovings that weighed 100g and 130g, and 140g of a khaki blend. I knew those would be useful to ply with the other fibres. Now I had bags of 585g of greens, almost 900g of blues and teals, 650g of plums and purples, 300g of reds and pinks, 265 of yellows and golds and 275 of pales - peach, lavender and beige. As it was lockdown, I had plenty of time, so I got in touch with a friend who had a drum carder and set aside some weekends to tackle the stash.
