I have always sketched in a non-precious way; in order to capture and explore design ideas, the pencil must move quickly. Quite often the sketches move between scales freely, with a tiny elevation study closely followed by an internal 3D or spatial diagram - one and the same, working and testing on the same page at the same time, often vying for space. So why do I do it? I often sketch as soon as possible after visiting a new site. This initial 'brain dump' tries to capture all the aspects of that exciting first visit, when conversations, client brief and constraints and opportunities are all up in the air. This is not intended to be the only solution, yet very often sketches begin to capture the 'thread' and nascent idea that will be developed. Why is sketching important? I find being able to draw quickly helps me day-to-day in many ways. First and foremost, it serves to test an idea in the studio. And it gives you the ability to explain to others your thought processes, which is especially important on site when providing quick solutions as necessary.
