Analysis of combined data from three large-scale prospective studies in Finland, Sweden and Denmark indicates that workplace violence is associated with an increased risk of suicide1. Self-reported exposure to workplace violence (threats or actual violence) was recorded at the outset of each study. Data on suicide attempts and deaths were obtained from national health records. Exposure and outcome data were available for 205,048 participants, of whom 35,588 had been exposed to violence or threats. There were 1,103 suicide attempts or deaths. After controlling for age, sex, educational level and family situation, exposure to workplace violence was associated with a 34% increased risk of suicide attempts or death (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.34; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.56; p <0.0001).The association remained significant after controlling additionally for mental health problems (HR = 1.25; CI 1.08-1.47; p = 0.005). Exposure to workplace violence was significantly associated both with suicide attempts (HR = 1.26; CI 1.06-1.49; p = 0.008) and suicide deaths (HR = 1.76; CI 1.21-2.54; P = 0.003).
