We have examined the various methods of electrical circuit protection and power factor in recent months along with ways to modify this important parameter. As technology advances and we are exposed to more electronic devices, it is incumbent upon each of us to learn about the many ways these new devices can be compromised or fail so we can adequately respond to better serve our customers. This month, we will continue this year's concentration on electrical topics with the first installment of a two-part series on power quality problems and harmonics. This discussion will be largely limited to power quality issues in single- and three-phase electrical and electronic systems. A detailed discussion on the impact that power quality has on and from transformers, induction motors, and variable frequency drives will be outlined next month in Part 2.
