The recent publication of Lane, Lucas & Whiffin (2020), with the new keys it contains, led to AD's re-examination of a series of larger silphids that have resided in his collection for several years. Of particular interest were two beetles originally keyed using Joy (1932) and marked on the determination label as Silpha tyrolensis? with collection data of Haweswater, Cumbria, 07.vi.1997 (NY329949) and High Sweden Bridge, Ambleside, Cumbria, l.vi.2000 (NY378053). Both specimens were found in the open on sheep-grazed south facing hillsides. Elytral and habitus photographs were sent to AW who confirmed that the specimens are Silpha tyrolensis Laicharting and are the first known English specimens recorded since 1963.
