That was quite a step. Others felt such a purist affair would only ever appeal to a niche audience. Even Duxford's existing warbird event, the Classic Fighter show - run jointly by the IWM, TFC and the Old Flying Machine Company - always had a jet element, both modem and historic. The Great Warbirds Air Display, by then being staged at Wroughton, and the North Weald Fighter Meet went further by including present-day helicopters, airliners and aerobatic acts. Flying Legends would have none of that. After more than a quarter of a century, the Tightness of the idea - that historic aeroplanes could stand on their own - seems obvious. But back then it was quite the innovation.
