In recent decades, Europe's growing urban population has on average become older, more multinational, less educated and has tended to be rewarded with lower incomes. A society that is also becoming more heterogeneous, individualised and mobile is increasingly demanding a flexible range of spaces that can be designed in a lively way and used sustainably. Now, since 2020, a paradigm shift is also noticeable in the city. The demands on uses and functions are linked to the great need for quality of life and ecology. Directly linked to this are concrete spatial requirements and building qualities. Two examples of social housing construction, in Paris and Vienna, demonstrate how housing can be systematically positioned in the city while leaving the residents as much freedom as possible. The residential building on rue Jean-Bart by Jean-Christophe Quinton in Paris demonstrates this demand for quality both in the urban space and in the flats, and with strong materiality, querkraft Architekten redeveloped the Viennese municipal building Karlheinz-Hora-Hof in an even more structural way with additional space and infrastructural green space. In Karlsruhe, the new underground stations of the city railway not only created an impressive underworld by allmannwappner -the city also gets its strolling zone back with it. The important theme of the "productive city" is demonstrated by the CO-living Seeparq, a mixed-use townhouse in Vienna's Seestadt Aspern by POS architekten. SHIBUKAWA EDER ARCHITECTS also focus on diversity in the educational campus on Deutschordenstrasse, which, in view of its size, has a decisive influence on the development of the district. Generosity is also the credo of the Martin Auer studio in Graz.The new company headquarters, planned by j-c-k Janser Castorina Katzenberger, makes a statement for the city on the periphery. Space in the context of a city is a coherent construct, not a punctual one. And this means that the time of pure space acquisition is over.
