State-controlled mining frm Coal India (CIL) raised its out- put and sales in May from a year earlier to meet a seasonal increase in electricity demand. CIL — which meets more than 80pc of India's coal needs — produced 54.7mn t of coal last month, up by 30pc from a year earlier, according to provisional data released by the company. Production was also higher than 53.5mn t in April, but signif- cantly lower than 80.3mn t in March.
