Teresina, Brazil - Scientists at Federal University of Piaui have investigated a flame re-tardant PU-clay composite. PU-clay composites can be made by dispersing inorganic clays in a polymer matrix. Vermiculite, a swelling hydrous phyllosilicate clay, containing magnesium and iron cations, is made of thin crystal layers. At temperatures above 650°C it can expand up to 30 times its original volume, and is used as an additive in geopolymers to improve fire resistance and porosity.
