摘要

Fowler (1888) included Thinobius major Kraatz in his key to British Thinobius, based on material collected by Mr Crotch [sic, initials not stated] from Loch Rannoch. However, by 1913,Fowler & Donisthorpe (1913) considered that the British species was not major but angusticeps Fauvel. Also, in 1913,Norman H. Joy examined what he considered to be a different species and he (Joy, 1913a) described it as a new species, Thinobius longicornis, stating, "I took two specimens on May 1st, 1913, in flood rubbish gathered from the River Truim at Dalwhinnie, Inverness-shire, at an elevation of 1,100 feet, and sent to me in a bag". However, as this name was preoccupied he renamed it T. macroceros (Joy, 1913b). In his Practical Handbook, Joy (1932) treated the two species, angusticeps and macrocerus [sic], as distinct. The two names were listed separately by Kloet & Hincks (1945), but thirty-two years later, only a single name, major, was listed as valid by (Pope, 1977).
