Most of us birdwatchers have heard people decrying invasive exotic plants, but some of the reasons can be non-intuitive. When I started birding in 1975 in Michigan, the state's Department of Natural Resources actively encouraged people to plant multiflora rose to provide food and cover for birds and other wildlife; now, it's encouraging people to root it out everywhere because it crowds out native shrubs and other plants that host important native insects and provide a wider range of foods than multiflora rose can.
