The days of the classic urban square of the kind we are familiar with are numbered. As a result of climate change there is a growing need to create places where it is pleasant to spend time, even with increasing temperatures. in this respect, it is important not only to plan in a way that responds to the climate, but also to upgrade existing facilities. And indeed, in the Austrian capital Vienna a number of things are happening in this context. Against the background of three current conversion projects that have now reached the halfway stage, a cautiously positive assessment can be made. Loquaiplatz in Vienna's sixth municipal district is also known as Loquaipark. The reason for this is that it represents a special kind of park/ square typology with a high proportion of greenery. Previously rather unattractive, a 32-million-euro redesign now aims to upgrade this park. With this goal in mind, the specialists from the office of Carla Lo Landschaftarchitektur set to work and they have made every imaginable effort as regards achieving climate fitness. Afurther 106 trees have been added to the already substantial number of shrubs and trees and the park has been enlarged by adding 420 m~2 of planting beds. New fittings and play elements are included as well as climate features such as the currently popular spray mist showers and a water game. The facade of a neighbouring school has even been greened and integrated in the design of the park. Through these adaptations Mariahilf will certainly have an even greener square/ park, which can be used from next year on.
