Following the success of the Weaving Design Challenge in 2018 and the Spinning Challenge in 2020, the Online Guild promoted a six week Dye Challenge to its members as part of its regular 2022 programme of workshop activities. The blurb said it was 'to encourage us to break out of usual thinking patterns, and to explore combinations in our work we would never otherwise have used, while discovering new design possibilities, have fun and work within the boundaries of the 'hand' we are dealt'. A bit like life really! Each participant was dealt five cards, one apiece from the following categories: Dye Type - e.g. natural, synthetic dye; Fibre Type - e.g. cotton, wool, silk; Medium - e.g. yarn, unspun fibre, fabric; Technique - e.g. dip dye, eco dye, over dye; Colour or inspiration. The following article is the first in a short series that will explore the experience and techniques employed while documenting the results from various perspectives, including both participants and organising hosts.
