The question uppermost in every one's mind is what will happen from 2005, when the famous multi fibre arrangement comes to an end. It will be free for all. While it is generally accepted that while some will see this as an opportunity, some others will perceive this as a threat. How is India placed in the post 2004 era ? What are India's competitive advantages ? What will the role of technology be in furthering India's competitive strengths ? Though there are no clear cut answers to these questions, we shall try and analyse some'aspects, which may be throw light on how we are going to face these challenges. In some ways, the economic objectives and the political objectives of the Government converge in the case of textile industry. Economic Objective - in the sense of huge export opportunities in the quota free regime. Political Objective - in the sense of creating huge employment opportunities - since this industry is highly labour intensive and also its connection with the farm sector.
