Dosimetry is a field that deals with detection of ionizing radiation through studying widespread of materials and the influence and quantification of this radiation on the electronic configuration and structure of these materials. A major parameter that determines the quality of dosimeters and affects its performance is the imperfections found in the crystal structure. In this paper, we present the effects of radiation with beta particles on the structural properties of alpha-alumina. The samples were irradiated to different doses from 5.5 Gy up to 1100 Gy. Although all the compounds showed the hexagonal crystal structure, but it was observed the unit cell volume as well as the lattice parameters increase with radiation dose till 110 Gy. Moreover, corresponding to that increase in the lattice volume a simultaneous decrease in the TL intensity was observed to reach its minimum at the same dose then increase slightly; this behavior corresponds to an opposite trend with the lattice parameters. This effect can be assigned to the distortion in the structure upon radiation with beta particles and hence the decrease in the TL sensitivity.
